About Vijay Joshi

Vijay Joshi is an acclaimed Shahpura’s Nonpareil Phad artist. Vijay was trained and guided by his father Shri. Shanti Lal Joshi, a National Award winner. When it comes to Phad painting, it is considered to be an advanced art form in the Rajput School of art. The art is over 600 years old and is fabric based. Natural and Mineral dyes are used to paint and Vijay primarily paints on Khadi and Silk. His family including his father and uncle are also involved ensuring that this art continues to live. Paintings can be 20 feet to 30 feet in length and sometimes may take up to 2 to 3 months to be completed.

The uniqueness and novelty of Vijay’s Phad paintings are primarily based on the mythological stories related to the lives and achievements of various Hindu Gods such as Pabuji, Devnarayan, Ramdal (related to Ramayan), Krishnadala (related to Krishna) and Mataji ka Chandwa. But keeping up with the times has also meant that Vijay customises art as per customer requirements which even includes a painting of one of India’s superstars, Mr. Amitabh Bachchan. Vijay himself has been a recipient of a number awards himself- National Merit Award, National Fellowship, Rajasthan State Bronze, Award for Folk Art and Kalananda Art Contest.
