Varnam has been instrumental in the revival of the ancient art of lacquerware in Channapatna, Karnataka.
Set up with the single minded mission to reinterpret its 200 year old toy craft, every attempt has been to ensure that each design has a utilitarian value and thereby relevant today. Skill training and exposure to modern day requirements has been a key focus- to enable self sufficiency of the craftspersons.
Alongside, building up a sense of pride among the master crafts-people for their skill to ensure that these crafts continue to thrive has been a key factor in this crossover of Ancient craft to Contemporary offerings.
In an industry where more than 90% of the artisans are men, most of these creations have been deftly hand-crafted by women artisans.
Varnam believes in providing sustainable livelihoods on a consistent basis to artisan groups along with regular training.
